Greetings! My name is Roger Wey and with over 20 years of experience
of public service, I announce I am seeking the position of State Representative
for The Cape and The Islands.

Roger Wey begins his quest for State Rep., Ocean Park, Oak Bluffs,
June2008 |
It is my deep sense of commitment to the communities of Falmouth, Martha's
Vineyard, and Nantucket for their social, environmental, and financial
needs that leads me, at this time, to run for election to this very important
State level office.
My experience in the public sector includes more than 20 years as a
selectman on the Town level, and 8 years at the County level and as
a member of a Regulatory Commission and a Town Board of Appeals. Together
with my years in the private sector of owning and operating a hardware/lumber
company and construction company equips me with the knowledge, skills
and ability to take on the work of a State representative and to be
an effective leader.
Throughout my years in public office I have dealt with an assortment
of problems facing all of us in a consistent way --- listening to all
sides of the issue --- considering all the implications and consequences
--- making decisions that I believe are the right ones to make --- and
that respects the interests and needs of the people I have been elected
to serve. I have the ability to get things done while representing all
of the people.
My most compelling credential is experience and commitment with the
communities of Falmouth, Martha's Vineyard, and Nantucket. I believe
I can advocate on the voters' behalf and help bring solutions to the
many challenges that face our coastal communities. I consider myself
an environmentalist and an advocate for human services, both so crucial
to the rapid growth of Falmouth and the Islands.
My approach to dealing with the eclectic problems that face us remains
constant: listen to all sides of the issue, consider the implications,
and make a decision that respects the people I serve.
My strength of experience to work with others would help to ensure a
strong effective government.
Several years ago I spearheaded a successful effort to keep the Town
of Oak Bluffs from withdrawing from the Martha’s Vineyard Commission,
a regulatory body for planning and development on the Island of Martha’s
Vineyard. I also was a major opponent of a proposal which would have
destroyed about 300 acres of woodland in an area known as the Southern
Woodlands in the Town of Oak Bluffs. Because of my efforts, along with
many others, the outcome was that about 2/3rds of the land was purchased
through acquisition by the Martha’s Vineyard Land Bank –
keeping the woodland intact for the people for all times.
For the last four years I have attended the National Conference on Public
Employee Retirement Systems. This organization represents over 500 public
sector pension funds. While on Capitol Hill I met with Ron Carlton,
a staff member of Senator Edward Kennedy’s office, Matt Summers,
of Senator John Kerry’s office, John Ivech and Congressman William
Delahunt to seek support for grants and to help resolve issues for town
and counties.
Experience, common sense, and an open mind – I will always listen
to you.
Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns you wish to
discuss. Your opinion and conversation are very important to me as I
address my candidacy for House Representative.
AS YOUR NEXT STATE REPRESENTATIVE I WILL FOCUS MY ENERGY ON
THE FOLLOWING:
1. Additional Chapter 70 Funds and education reform.
2. Additional Chapter 90 Funds for current maintenance and back log
of needed repairs.
3. Lowering our property insurances and monitoring the “Fair Plan”.
4. Securing additional money for human services, more treatment centers,
social work, food banks, fuel assistance, etc.
5. Work against the 2008 ballot initiatives to eliminate the state income
tax.
6. Streamline the current reporting that the towns are required to make
to the state.
7. Support the Ocean Management Act and continue to improve it.
8. Support the fishing industry so that the small off-shore fisherman
can survive.
9. Support bills that would guarantee safe RN staffing in Massachusetts
hospitals.
10. Increase funding for Senior Centers.
11. Increase funding for renewable energy.
My goal for the people of this legislative district is a strong and
effective government – one that works for everyone.
I am committed to working hard for the people of this district, applying
my years of experience and dedicated public service, common sense, and
open mindedness to the task ahead.
Thank you for visiting, and I hope you will return again soon!
